Retire among friends at Friendship Village Columbus

LGBTQ Older Adults

When beginning the process of looking for a place to retire, options are important to older adults during their search. Friendship Village Columbus is a Life Plan Community offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, short-term rehab and long-term care. Our community provides maintenance-free living with several different floor plans to suite your needs and lifestyle. Independent living choices include apartments or newly renovated garden homes that offer outdoor patio space and privacy.

All-inclusive senior living community

What exactly does this mean? At Friendship Village Columbus we are an inclusive, open, non-discriminating and affirming senior living retirement community where ALL are welcomed in our community of friends, including your family pet! FVC features an all-inclusive price structure and community amenities including hobby rooms, a billiards parlor, library, fitness center, nature trails and gardening spaces.

Recognizing a need

A recent article on AARP highlights the need for communities to step up and fight for the rights of LGBTQ older adults. Older adults who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender often age alone. According to Doveal Goins, Psy.D., a mental health therapist in Washington, D.C. “there’s already a level of discrimination just for being older and more so if you’re LGBT.” With the aging boomer population and more than 2.7 million people over 50 identifying as LGBT or LGBTQ, the demand for inclusive and affirming communities and housing could not be greater.

According to Sage, an organization that provides advocacy and services for LGBTQ older adults, did you know:

  • LGBTQ older adults are twice as likely to be single and live alone
  • Four times less likely to have children
  • Far more likely to have faced discrimination and social stigma
  • More likely to face poverty and homelessness
  • More likely to experience poor health

Even though LGBTQ older adults face these challenges, they are resilient and are able to live vibrant, full lives across the U.S. and around the world thanks to advocates like Sage and communities like Friendship Village Columbus who are making the rights of LGBTQ older adults a priority and providing a safe, open and affirming place to live their life to the fullest.

At FVC, we believe in a message of love, compassion and peace. Our doors will always be open and affirming to anyone who enters. Our goal is to be an advocate for anyone who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. To learn more about your rights, gain access to helpful resources or to get involved on a deeper level of advocacy, visit Sage.

We moved to Friendship Village Columbus for various reasons. We are reasonably healthy and wanted to be sure we could enjoy the benefits of independent living before moving to the next phase of our lives. Through the experience of some friends we decided to skip the condo phase and go directly to a friendly senior living environment.

We moved here before we were 70 to allow for a pleasurable retirement. The Lifecare contract, safety, amenities and activities supersede any other facilities we considered. Camaraderie between residents and staff is a rich experience.
