The social and physical benefits of travel

Traveling as you age can improve your mental, emotional and physical health and help you to stay socially active. The Global Coalition on Aging recently produced a white paper on the mental benefits that travel can bring to older adults. According to the coalition, “it is becoming increasingly clear that as one travels, one will be healthier, which is good for the individual as well as society.” Globally, there will be 1 billion people over the age of 60 by 2020 and currently in the U.S., there is already a higher proportion of people over 60 than under 15.

Things like navigating new cities, exploring museums, having conversations with new people, practicing new languages and seeing new sights can flex the mental muscles, keeping seniors’ brains active and engaged. Traveling also doesn’t mean that you have to spend a lot of money and fly clear across the country. There are many activities and things to do and see right in your home state! At Friendship Village Columbus, we believe that travel is part of healthy aging and that our residents can benefit in a multitude of ways.

Staying socially active as you age isn’t just about having fun. Research has found that if you maintain close friendships and interact socially, you’ll probably live longer and protect yourself against disease by boosting your immune system.

Some specific benefits to staying socially active as you age include potentially reduced risk for cardiovascular problems and cancer, potentially reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk for mental health problems such as depression.

A recent study found that even when you have health-related challenges, staying socially active as you age appears to lessen the decline in well-being some older adults often experience.

Financial advantages of travel for older adults

There are many discounts available to older adults who like or wish to travel. AARP recently launched 45 travel discounts for your next great escape. There are many companies that are known to offer travel discounts to older adults—you just have to be willing to do a little research!

If you’re looking for an in-depth guide to discounts, travel blogs, travel insurance, group tours or other informative travel information for older adults, visit upgradedpoints.com. This site provides an entire travel and discount guide for older adults in 2018.

Scheduled trips or seasonal moves

Many times older adults choose to spend certain months out of the year in other geographic locations. This could be to escape the cold winter months or it could mean visiting three months out of the year to spend time with family. At Friendship Village Columbus, we offer a flexible lifestyles program for not only snowbirds, but travelers who move seasonally throughout the year.

The flexible lifestyles program is offered to older adults who live elsewhere for extended periods, offering discounts on contracted monthly fees and dining charges. We offer this program to all independent living residents with Life Care of Life Choice contracts, as well. A benefit that Friendship Village Columbus offers through the flexible lifestyles program is there isn’t a maximum number of days required that you must stay. This is a rare finding through senior living communities and just another reason why FVC is the premier senior living community in Columbus.

How does the FVC flexible lifestyles program work?

Do you split your time between residences but are considering making the move to an active senior living community? If so, the flexible lifestyles program is more than likely an option that you want to consider. FVC offers specific discounts to couples and singles that are credited for a minimum of 90 consecutive days, with no maximum time frame required. You can read more about the discounts here. The program is perfect for older adults who wish to maintain dual residences or love to travel for extended periods.

There are countless health benefits for older adults who travel. Think about this—you’ve waited, worked and saved your whole life for retirement. Now it’s here and it’s your time to make the most of every day. What will you do? For many, it’s time to enjoy life to the absolute fullest. One of the ways to truly enjoy life to the fullest and live a worry-free retirement is choosing somewhere like Friendship Village Columbus to call home. We moved to Friendship Village Columbus for various reasons. We are reasonably healthy and wanted to be sure we could enjoy the benefits of independent living before moving to the next phase of our lives. Through the experience of some friends we decided to skip the condo phase and go directly to a friendly senior living environment.

We moved here before we were 70 to allow for a pleasurable retirement. The Lifecare contract, safety, amenities and activities supersede any other facilities we considered. Camaraderie between residents and staff is a rich experience.
